Victoria Beckham’s latest collection was inspired by the sense of naiveté found in 1990s films like The Virgin Suicides and Romeo and Juliet. The result was a playful collection with a slightly off kilter feel.
Key pieces had a vintage or borrowed quality: Ruffled and ruched dresses in light blue, parchment, and peppermint were spray painted with arty stains. Lace edged slipdresses came with built in wrinkles, suggesting they were tossed aside. Japanese denim jeans featured folded over waists that were pinned in place for a quick fit.
Beckham continued her focus on silhouette through volume and structure. Mannish suits were intentionally roomy on the models. Dresses were fitted with small wires, creating sculptural ruffles around the neck. Short black skirts utilized built in wire hoops, giving them a lampshade appearance. This volume was countered by slim textured knitwear, including long skirts and sweaters with ridges or waffle surfaces.
For eveningwear, the sense of fantasy continued with short, curvy corset dresses scattered with tone on tone feathers, referencing the wings from Romeo and Juliet.
